Every now and then an artist comes along
who reminds me why I like painting so much. David Wells Roth is such an
artist. He has the rare ability to choose just those features from the
raw materiel of his subjects that result in compelling and absorbing
images. Especially noteworthy is Roth's skill in manipulating light. He
not only uses it to bathe the subject's forms with a unifying
illumination, he creates a time of day and even a mood, often
melancholy, that we who have lived and wandered the streets of big
cities, know well. Roth's paintings reveal a savvy and caring mind at
work; they are so well drawn, composed, and felt. In the best of his
paintings (and they are many) I find those
qualities we associate with serious mastery.
